Preparation
Follow the instructions found on the tin when preparing, painting and maintaining the metal, so you get the best result and 15 year protection
- Make sure the metal is clean, dry and free from grease, dust and dirt. Paint only when the air and surface temperature is above 10°C and it's not forecast to rain.
- If you're painting bare metal- Remove loose rust or paint with a wire brush or 120 grit sandpaper. Wipe down with a damp cloth and remove all dirt.
- If you're preparing previously painted metal - If the paint is in good condition and isn’t flaking, lightly sand it with 240 grit sandpaper.
- It is important that you remove flaking paint prior to applying Ronseal Direct to Metal. You can do this with some sandpaper or a wire brush.
- Wipe with a damp cloth and let it dry.
Take extra care when preparing any surfaces that were painted before 1960, as they may be coated with lead paint.
Application
Stir the tin to mix the product and apply to a small area to ensure you are happy with the colour and finish.
- Give the paint a thoroughly good stir for 2 to 3 minutes and apply with a brush, roller or spray.
- If you're spraying the paint, dilute it with approx. 10% water or to the specs on the sprayer you are using.
- Leave for 2 to 4 hours between each coat.
- 2 coats should give you enough coverage, for ultimate durability or if you're painting rusty metal, it is advisable to use 3 coats.
- The paint will be touch dry 30 minutes following the last coat.
Note: Always follow the manufacturer instructions found on the tin.
Aftercare & Storage
Remove as much paint off your brush or roller as possible. Wash in warm soapy water. Don’t empty leftover paint into drains or watercourses. Contact your local authority, who may have ways to get rid of unused paint.
To keep your metal looking great, check it over for any imperfections each year. If you notice any cracks, blisters or scratches, sand off any loose bits and touch the defective area up with 2 coats of Direct to Metal Paint.
