Preparation

Always read the manufacturers directions found on the tin before you begin.

  • Ensure that the surfaces to be stained are sound, dry, clean and free from dust and grease. Conceal any nail or screw heads below the surface and conceal with a suitable wood filler
  • Bare or New Wood: Oily hardwoods or resinous soft woods should be wiped down well with White Spirit to remove natural oils. Sand along the grain to a achieve a smooth finish. Wear a suitable face mask if dry sanding and do not inhale the dust. Treat new and bare exterior wood with a clear wood preserver.
  • Previously Stained Surfaces: Rub down with fine waterproof abrasive paper and mild soapy water, then rinse and dry thoroughly.
  • Previously Painted or Varnished Wood: Remove all traces of the previous treatment with a Paint and Varnish Stripper, then treat as for bare or new wood - see above

Please Note: Not suitable for use on linseed oil putty, may be used on wooden glazing beads.

Application

We always recommend preforming a test patch to ensure compatibility, ensure to also follow the instructions found on the packaging.

  • Stir well before use. Work the stain along the grain with a brush being sure to avoid overlapping the brush strokes. Bare wood will need 3 coats, previously stained wood will need 2
  • Allow 4 hours between coats. Under normal conditions the surface will be touch dry in 1 hour. Do not apply at temperatures below 10ºC, in damp conditions or if it's likely to rain.
  • Johnstone's Woodcare Indoor & Outdoor Woodstain has a naturally milky appearance when it's wet, this is normal and it will disappear when the stain is completely dry. The final colour achieved depends on the original colour of the wood and how many coats are applied.
  • It is recommended that you test the colour in an inconspicuous area before you start.
